Fifteen years after HIV/AIDS surfaced in Ghana in 1986, the Government created the Ghana AIDS Commission to coordinate the various, usually ineffective, public sector efforts to create awareness about the menace. Now there is some focus. Awareness is increasing, but the rapid rise in HIV/AIDS incidence appears to be continuing.
Professor Sakyi Awuku Amoa, Director-General, Ghana AIDS Commission, holds the BA and MA degrees in Sociology from the University of Ghana, Master of Social Sciences (MSS) and Postgraduate Diploma in National Development from the Institute of Social Studies, The Hague, and Advanced Certificate in Senior Executive Management from Manchester, UK. He is a Chartered Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development, UK, and a Fellow of the Institute of Human Resource Practitioners, Ghana.
